I’m still riding high from the results of last Tuesday’s elections. I can’t remember the last time I felt relief and joy from an election rather than disappointment, anger, and anxiety. I fully expected Jay Jones would lose out after his text message scandal, and I still worried it would be extremely close between Hashmi and John Reid. I also was not expecting Democrats to take 13 seats in the House of Delegates, which of course has major implications on redistricting. It was also gratifying to see that a Democratic candidate that one of my climate activist groups had campaigned for, won her seat! Strange to feel some semblance of hope or optimism at a time like this. Maybe we aren’t too far gone after all!

That is balanced out a little bit by this week being the one year anniversary of our younger French bulldog, Soto, crossing the rainbow bridge after we had to put him down due to complications from IVDD (two ruptured discs in his back). Last November, we took him to the vet because he had started limping and dragging his back leg; just one day later he couldn’t walk at all. Imaging confirmed the IVDD diagnosis and we mad the difficult decision to put him down, since his prospects of a decent quality of life would’ve been greatly diminished. And that decision happened in the span of about 30 minutes, and was something we didn’t even consider walking into the appointment. Single worst day of my life, bar none. Soto was only five. But we later brought home a new Frenchie pup, Joey, who shares a lot of Soto’s personality (bought her from the same breeder), and she’s been a delight to have around!

Work is going well…things are starting to wind down for the holiday season, we’re about to get all the greenhouses covered. I have really amazing co-workers that I’ve bonded well with since moving over to the nursery from the production farm earlier this year (back in late February). Every Friday after work we hang out on the office porch and chat over beer. I feel super blessed to work with people I wouldn’t hesitate to hang out with outside of work.
