Another solid therapy session today. Most of the session was about how rattled I was over the President declaring martial law in D.C., and the impact that had on my anxiety levels. I also shared how it feels like ever since the pandemic, my “baseline” mental state (how I feel when there’s nothing I’m actively worried or upset about) is much higher than pre-pandemic. It’s like there’s this constant slow-drip or low hum of tension/anxiety now that never turns off and is always lurking in the back of my mind, and it makes it harder to “be present” and just let go and enjoy what’s right in front of me.
But there are ways to deal with that and minimize its impact. For starters, making a list of things that are going well in my life and keeping that list on hand. For example, my social life has never been better…between hanging out with awesome co-workers after hours, and building friendships with my activist group colleagues. I’m usually out at some function or event several days a week now, making a difference, rather than sitting at home and ruminating.
I’m also on vacation this week and planning on making a trip to Virginia Beach for the day, and also maybe a day trip out west to the Blue Ridge Parkway for some hiking. Hopefully the weather will cooperate, it’s supposed to be a little cooler, with spotty afternoon/evening showers/storms here and there. Being out in nature is always a reliable salve for anxious thoughts.
