I didn’t really think this through….
Time travel remains near the top of my general “wish list” for global technological achievement, if for no other reason (and there are certainly no shortage of reasons) than to go back in time to 2019 when my wife and I were looking for a new house and strongly impress upon my past self that it would be a good idea to look for a townhome or condo, rather than your typical suburban house with yard. Spending one of only two days off, EVERY weekend, mowing two large yards, weed whacking, and ripping out Bermuda grass, Virginia Creeper vine, pokeweed, mulberry saplings, porcelainberry, and other invasive plants is getting old, especially this summer which has been the hottest and most humid I can remember since moving to Virginia from San Diego in 1995. And for additional context, I work outside year round at a local plant nursery, with very little shade, so my energy level is pretty spent by the time I get home.
It wouldn’t be so bad if I weren’t dealing with such a plethora of invasive plants but I just never feel like I can quite get ahead of them. There’s hardly enough time to do things I WANT to do in the garden. So I’d just as soon have a patio just big enough for some potted plants, maybe a raised bed or two for herbs and vegetables. If we as a country aren’t going to let go of “rise and grind” and finally recognize that it’s not healthy to devote every waking moment to our jobs, then I need every minute of those precious 48 hours to unwind from toiling outside under increasingly harsh conditions (thanks, climate change). On the other hand, perhaps I could entice some friends to help put a major dent in the weed removal with food and drink, and at least get things to a point where I can maintain it at a level I can feel somewhat satisfied with. This is probably a more realistic and achievable plan than moving, lol!
